RS Oil spill experiment10 March 2020 (by Amy Henderson (AHenderson)) |
To celebrate Science week, we carried out an experiment to see what happens when oil spills into the ocean.
In RS, we have enjoyed learning about recycling and recently read the story 'Somebody swallowed Stanley' about a plastic bag causing problems for ocean animals. Following this, we were all excited to learn more about keeping the ocean safe and clean.
To celebrate science week, we followed our interest in the ocean and learnt about what happens when oil is spilled into the ocean. We watched short videos about real life oil spills and then recreated this in our classroom. We shared lots of good ideas such as: 'tip the water out' and 'take all the animals out', but as one member of our class pointed out 'we need to keep the water for the penguins'. We attempted to remove the oil from the water in different ways though it was very tricky. Then we cleaned the animals in some soapy water, just like in the video.
